I need your opinion

So, i need your professional opinion on the car maker Volvo. I've been on the market recently looking for a fuel-efficient, safe, and AWD/FWD vehicle. At first, i was looking at SUV's but that was a bust because they are not fuel-efficient by any means. The only SUV's that are fuel-efficient are small SUV's but i need the cargo room for long trips/baby stuff/suitcases. Which then pushed me to station wagons, they have plenty of cargo room, good on fuel, safe, and AWD/FWD. So i accepted the fact that i was now looking at station wagons and not fast and furious cars. Maturity checkpoint in my life i guess... Anywho, so therefore i started looking at the Subaru Outback and Subaru Legacy wagon, but i couldn't find any that were in my price range. Which sent me away from AWD vehicles because AWD vehicles are essentially more expensive. So, i'm thinking FWD now because that's the next step down from AWD (as far as handling in icy/snowy conditions) is FWD. As i'm looking around, there isn't really any "bad ass" station wagons out there :P. But i stumble across Volvo, from what i hear has a fairly good reputation and is extremely safe, fuel-efficient, great cargo room and FWD. It's a 2006 Volvo V70. Does anyone know or know of anyone, who's has problems with cost of maintenance, shitty vehicle, etc...?
Here it is and do you think it's a good deal? http://www.cagaustin.com/detail-2006-volvo-v70-t5-used-6524531.html

I've heard mixed things about Volvo's. My uncle absolutely loves them, and will defend them until the cows come home.
I've also read (specifically about the V70) that there are some common problems with the electronic throttle module and transmission.
Unless they've put out recalls, I'd be a little more cautious in getting this. You really don't want to be taking chances with transmission problems - they're expensive and can take a long time to troubleshoot/fix (especially with auto transmissions).

Of course this is just what I've read. Maybe Balz has more insight on the car.

Thanks for the Transmission insight. After doing research transmission problems for that year i couldn't find all that much. On the other hand the earlier years had plenty of complaints. Thanks again.

I'm surprised you can't find a Subaru for the same price range as this Volvo.
I've been in the same situation as you, looking for a family vehicle that's fuel efficient with good storage space, and I've been looking at Subarus. I've seen quite a few in the $12,000-15,000 range. Maybe the Canadian market is a bit different, but you'd think an AWD vehicle would be worth more in Ottawa than California

Well i can find Subarus within that range but then your deal with 2005's that have 80k miles. 2006's with 90/120k. i'm looking for anything remotely close to 2006 or higher with 65k or less.

This Dodge Magnum 33kmiles has the V6 and is decent on gas. The V6 also has some pep to it. I personally drove one and was impresssed with how big it was inside and just how much that V6 could hustle.

2007 Mazda5 33k These things get awesome gas mileage and are spacious inside. Also fun to drive.

Another Mazda5

Subie outback low miles. A Subie with 50k in miles is just broke in.

Good deals on Subies are out there. You may have to expand your search range. I would also recommend going to one of those used car places, and see if you can kinda get buddy buddy with one of the dealers and maybe pay him to let you in on an auction. Those are really good deals. All the above cars are under 15k.

Thanks for the search! Unfortunately, I have a personal issue with Mopar IMO the engine are terrible! I had an '05 durango that was just giving me big intermittent engine problems. Same with my '07 jeep commander, it'll bog down and rev up making the car jump! I've almost been into 2 wrecks because this problems. As for the Mazda 5, my wife's mother drives one and it feels and looks cheaply made. Great on gas mileage though! Yet, not big enough for me. What's your beef with volvo? Bad experience? One wrecked into you making you bias againist it?

Have you thought about getting a Volkswagen....wagon?
The Jetta SportWagen starts at $19,825 USD for a 2011. I'm sure you could find a 2008-2009 for a price that can agree with you.
Plus it's a Volkswagen. Very reliable, and you can get them in diesel which will definitely help the whole fuel economy aspect.

From Autotrader

Wow, i never looked at the VDub's before found some good ones here and there too after doing some looking around. As for the diesel aspect goes, i would love to own one, but unfortunatly finding gas stations in San Francisco Bay area that actually have diesel is fucking ridiculous! As of right now i put a down payment to hold the volvo but i can back out if it's not what i expected, mechanical problems, and so on... But i'm still looking around and i actually just found a Subaru Outback 2006 same price, and i love the color and mileage but we shall see. Thanks for your help and i'll let you know what i find out/do.

ok late to reply.. but i drive a Volvo at work, and based on my experience with several different Volvos.... Volvo sucks. too many problems to name, but let me put it this way: they do NOT know how to make a vehicle.

I think that Volvo commercial trucks are built a bit different than Volvo family wagons.
