Balz's Dub

I have been spending alot of time on this little car I found, and thought I would share the story with my fav peeps. Also, I thought I had already posted this in here before, but couldnt find it, or didnt look hard enough.

Here it was when I got it

Here ya go:

Lots of little things have been repaired or replaced. Timing belt, water pump, power steering pump & reservoir, new v belts, fuel filter, oil change.

The fuel return lines were rotted out and one sprung a leak while it was warming up at my local Circle K whist getting coffee. Two learned lessons from that. NAPA is the only real auto parts store here in Florida. Everyone else are just accessories and cleaning supplies stores. Window washer fluid tubing is not a good replacement.

Upon recommendation from just about every user on a site for these, I have got some gauges installed. I have one or two left to go, tach and volt. I liked the VDO gauges and went with the BFI Kit. to mount them in a stock looking fashion. The one on the left is for the turbo, the right for engine exhaust.

Replaced some things..

Made it clear that following behind me is probably not in your best intrests if you're in a hurry...

Other than that I have just rubbed on it some to brighten it up, clean up the plastics, and tinted it. (A must in the "sunshine state")

Just plan on putting eibachs all around to drop it a bit, those sexy black nickel wheel studs from BFI, e codes and smoke out the rest of the lights, and an intercooler. I've snagged one from a junked Saab 900S. That will be about all I will be able to get away with before my fiance pulls the cord on my VW spending in anticipation of the upcoming wedding in Feb.

Here is what she looks like currently...

Everything sounds awesome, except smoked headlights. Something about it just bugs me - seems counter-productive to the lights' intended purpose.

Anyways, love the car. Old V-dubs are great. Looking forward to hearing about the progress.

Oh I wont be smoking out the headlights, Ill be getting the clear e codes. all the other lights are smoked but have an amber bulb except the red in the taillights. Really its just getting rid of all the orange.

This came in the mail today.

Yep, thats right. Maxes out at 6000rpm. This weekend for the install. Need to know at what rpm I am making X boost and Y EGT. So this way I can install a boost controller and really get some zip outta this little soot maker.

Impressive Ballz... sorry for my lack of auto knowledge, but what does the VW diesel get in gas mileage? I watched the youtube vids of you fixing the hood. Alot of hard work... how many hours total have you put into the car so far?

I am currently getting 35 mpg, but have some tweaks to make to it for efficiency (and ore power!)

Not too much. Aside from the hood, everything else has been a few hour projects to maybe a day. The car is pretty cherry from when I got it for a 20 year old car. Paint is in sad shape, past what a good buffing can do, but the hood needed protection as that peeling from down to bare metal. I will probably do some minor body work on it to repair places where previous owners have used wood screws to repair shit and that dent in the back. Remove some of the crappy plastic cladding and than do a cheap respray.

That will be down the line though. I have a few more mechanical improvements I need to address first. I run higher than I would like EGT's (Engine exhaust temp) at WOT (wide open throttle). To fix this, I need to run plumbing for an intercooler.
The current setup for the turbo on this car has the air coming from the cold side (of a very hot turbo)directly into the intake manifold. So Im gonna run some piping that takes that air through an intercooler to cool it down and than into the intake manifold. This will help it breathe colder air, and motors love cold air.

The other part of that is the exhaust. The current downpipe is a puny 1.5 inch (3.81 cm) and doesnt let the motor "exhale" as well. TechTonics, an aftermarket supplier for eurocars, makes a 2.5 inch (6.35cm)downpipe. Combine that with a straight back exhaust (turbo's make great mufflers)she can breathe free all the way out the back.

O mai I have been rambling. All the above makes it go faster and sound awesome.

Last day of Vacation and I wanted to some quality time with the dub. However II didnt wanna spend any money. So I started thinking about the exhaust. It has a rattle that reverberates through the whole car. Got some coffee, used the leaf blower to clean off the driveway/working surface.

Jacked it up, use wheel chock, jack stand.

Got up underneath it and tightened everythng I could tighten, after a heavy dose of GT85 to loosen up the rusty stuff. Still rattle. I could see where the muffler was rattling against a heat shield. Adjusted the bolt in the little hangar thingy, but when you do that the muffler now rattles off of the side of the channel for the muffler.

Enter the Dremel. I decided that if I was going to fix this, the right way, I needed to get it to a shop, but that would violate my rule of the day of not spending money.

Orrrrrrrr

Realizing what I was gonna do, and that I had the perfect turndown pipe I had snagged off of a Saab intercooler on a junk yard run, I grabbed my Flip cam and shot a little before and after. Enjoy!
