Organized Backups

Just a heads up ... Sometimes Backups don't totally work out as planned .... I had a site fail once before and I had some backups
but when I tried to use them , I kept getting corrupt file errors and still lost everything .. but on a plus note I have also been saved by
backups as well . so don't get me wrong , you are doing a good thing . just want to make a few more suggestions .

1# SQL Export your database into a Document . That way you can do a direct SQL Query to restore your Database .
Mainly because sometimes when a site crashes it might not let you in to your Admin Panel to be able to use a generated backup .

2# Also want to suggest that you Duplicate your database now and then .(you can always Delete databases if you get to many of them )
that way if there is a crash you can hurry up and connect to the 2nd database to keep things operational .
This option would only be for Emergencies . Because if you change Database names none of your
backups will work , But you will still have a working database .

I_H speaks the truth. Although I think part of CPanel's export process is building a pure SQL query backup of the database. It's been a while since I've used their backup utility though.
It is a good idea to duplicate the database on the same server though, for that exact reason of quick turnaround from corrupt to running. Even if you do it once a week or so, and just keep 2-3 backup databases on the server, while keeping all the backup zip files somewhere on your local filesystem.

The files I backup are zipped .sql files. So they can be restored through import or direct query. You can also use the notepad "find and replace" function to update database prefixes and names should they be changed after a backup is made fairly easily.

Our service also take nightly server backups of the full site, home directory, public_html, and all the databases that are able to be restored if needed should all of mine fail.

That is a plus that all that is set up for you .. I still have to do it all the old school way on all my sites
was just trying to give heads up ... but sounds like it is all under control

No problem, I've been taking care of this and a few other sites since 2004, so I've learned along the way, sometimes the hard way. So I have us pretty well covered now.

I kinda miss the days of having to re-register every time i wanted to post on the forum lol

And you came on board in 2008, so you only got a portion of the full experience, didn't even get to experience our forum software shifts. :P

If the E-Bricks site is ~17MB of pure SQL, looks like it's doing really well!

Some of that is due to modifcations adding in table rows to the database, but it is doing well. 400+ members and about 18,000 posts.
